Network fundamentals
OSI
Create, record, and upload a performance piece (eg: poem, song, rap) naming and describing the seven layers of the OSI model.
Types of networks
For each of the following types of network:
- Research the hardware and software necessary for implementation.
- Identify the advantages and disadvantages.
- Determine the criteria which can be used to judge its suitability for a particular situation.
- Identify the situations in which it would be unsuitable.
Network types:
- local area network (LAN)
- virtual local area network (VLAN)
- wide area network (WAN)
- storage area network (SAN)
- wireless local area network (WLAN)
- internet
- extranet
- virtual private network (VPN)
- personal area network (PAN)
- peer-to-peer (P2P)
Network implementation: 1
Use the information gleaned from the Types of networks assignment to recommend a network implementation to a client. The client may be a family member, friend, school or community organization, local business, or the workplace of a family member or friend. The recommendation will address:
- rationale for the implementation of a network
- hardware and software: both existing and newly required
- who will implement the network
- how long the implementation will take
- required changes in operating procedures
- required training
- costs
Network implementation: 2
Use the information gleaned from the Types of networks assignment to implement a network in our lab. Obtain network nodes from the Computing Clubhouse or other sources and implement a network with:
- a minimum of two client nodes and one server node
- a minimum of two different services
Documentation: Prepare and upload a photographic or video record of your activities which:
- describes a real-life situation which your implementation could represent
- outlines and justifies the decisions made during the implementation
- demonstrates the features of the network as implemented
- evaluates the success of the implementation
- identifies what, if anything, you would do differently the next time you implement a network
VPN
Identify the characteristics of the TDSB WAN and evaluate its use: What benefits accrue to students and stuff? What limitations are imposed? What are its principal conveniences and inconveniences?
Data transmission
Transmission Media
Prepare a chart comparing the characteristics of metal conductor, fibre optic, and wireless media. At a minimum, include speed, reliability, cost, and security.

Lossless and lossy. Practical examples of different file sizes and resulting transmission times. Experiment with compressed and non-compressed data: can a difference be seen? heard?
