Network fundamentals

OSI

Create, record, and upload a performance piece (eg: poem, song, rap) naming and describing the seven layers of the OSI model.

Types of networks

For each of the following types of network:

  1. Research the hardware and software necessary for implementation.
  2. Identify the advantages and disadvantages.
  3. Determine the criteria which can be used to judge its suitability for a particular situation.
  4. Identify the situations in which it would be unsuitable.

Network types:

  1. local area network (LAN)
  2. virtual local area network (VLAN)
  3. wide area network (WAN)
  4. storage area network (SAN)
  5. wireless local area network (WLAN)
  6. internet
  7. extranet
  8. virtual private network (VPN)
  9. personal area network (PAN)
  10. peer-to-peer (P2P)

Network implementation: 1

Use the information gleaned from the Types of networks assignment to recommend a network implementation to a client. The client may be a family member, friend, school or community organization, local business, or the workplace of a family member or friend. The recommendation will address:

  1. rationale for the implementation of a network
  2. hardware and software: both existing and newly required
  3. who will implement the network
  4. how long the implementation will take
  5. required changes in operating procedures
  6. required training
  7. costs

Network implementation: 2

Use the information gleaned from the Types of networks assignment to implement a network in our lab. Obtain network nodes from the Computing Clubhouse or other sources and implement a network with:

  1. a minimum of two client nodes and one server node
  2. a minimum of two different services

Documentation: Prepare and upload a photographic or video record of your activities which:

  1. describes a real-life situation which your implementation could represent
  2. outlines and justifies the decisions made during the implementation
  3. demonstrates the features of the network as implemented
  4. evaluates the success of the implementation
  5. identifies what, if anything, you would do differently the next time you implement a network

VPN

Identify the characteristics of the TDSB WAN and evaluate its use: What benefits accrue to students and stuff? What limitations are imposed? What are its principal conveniences and inconveniences?

Data transmission

Transmission Media

Prepare a chart comparing the characteristics of metal conductor, fibre optic, and wireless media. At a minimum, include speed, reliability, cost, and security.

Compression

Lossless and lossy. Practical examples of different file sizes and resulting transmission times. Experiment with compressed and non-compressed data: can a difference be seen? heard?
