Glossary

client

A program (also called an application program, application, or app) which issues requests of a server. For FirstClass, the client is the application program downloaded from TDSB’s TEL Download website and installed on your home, classroom, or office microcomputer. You use this program to access all of the functions and services provided by FirstClass. (If you’re using a computer which does not have the client installed, you can access many of the FirstClass services via TDSB’s TEL website, but access will be slower.)

container

A FirstClass object which contains items. Example are mailboxes; document, file, and web-publishing folders; calendars; conferences; and workspaces.

server

A program or set of programs, and the corresponding hardware, which honour (respond to) requests of one or more clients. For TEL, the server is the set of programs and computers maintained by TDSB at board offices to provide centralized and regulated access to all of the functions and services available in FirstClass.

TEL

An acronym for Toronto Education Link, the name given to TDSB’s FirstClass server and all of the features provided through it.
