History of Microsoft DOS and Command Prompt
Ms DOS stands for Microsoft Disk Operating System. Ms DOS is a non graphical commandline operating system that was designed specifically for IBM computers. It was first indroduced by Microsof in August 1981 and was last updated in 1994. MS-DOS uses only commands and a mouse is not necessary. For example now a days to see whats in a directry you would doubloe click that directry to open it, but in MS-DOS you have to type a specific command to view a specific directry. Microsoft licensed and released MS_DOS under different names such as Lifeboat Associates "Software Bus 86 aka SB-DOS, COMPAQ-DOS, NCR-DOS or Z-DOS before they eventualy chose the name MS-DOS.

MS-DOS 4.x - includes a graphical/mouse interface.

After Windows 95 Microsoft DOS was used commonly, however many people still use command prompt that is included the new versions of Windows.
